Climate Foundation restores ocean ecosystems with Marine Permaculture® and seaweed-based technologies, creating sustainable livelihoods and removing carbon to fight climate change.

Mission

The Climate Foundation is dedicated to advancing economically and ecologically sustainable solutions to urgent environmental crises - focusing on food security, ecosystem regeneration, and climate resilience. We catalyze systemic change by deploying cutting-edge Marine Permaculture® systems and seaweed-based biotechnologies that enable regenerative livelihoods, revive marine ecosystems, and contribute to verified carbon removal.

What Climate Foundation Does

Climate Foundation tackles global warming by developing innovative solutions to restore disrupted ocean ecosystems. As climate change has broken down natural ocean processes and caused kelp forests worldwide to collapse, the organization focuses on reversing this damage through cutting-edge marine technology.

The foundation's primary approach is Marine Permaculture (MP) - a system that address all three legs of the climate triad:

1. Emissions reduction through agricultural intervention that reduces the carbon intensity of agriculture by ~35%

2. Carbon removal through the 1/4 of seaweed that naturally falls off the MP platform during growth and sinks 1000m per day to remain for centuries.

3. Climate repair through the generation of biogenic cloud condensation nuclei gases that help to rebrighten marine clouds and coastal regions implementing marine permaculture.

The Climate Foundation has developed Marine Permaculture systems that bring deep ocean nutrients to the surface via deepwater irrigation, restoring seaweed productivity even in nutrient-depleted tropical waters. These systems are designed for local implementation, scalable by smallholder growers using regionally sourced materials, and can operate in over 50% of the world’s tropical and subtropical oceans.

Currently, the Climate Foundation has 2,500 m² of MP deployed in the Camotes Sea, with plans to scale up to 1 hectare in the coming year.

Alongside MP arrays, the organization is pioneering cascading seaweed biorefineries - modular, transportable systems that convert freshly harvested seaweed into BIGgrow, a proprietary organic biostimulant that boosts crop yields by 15–30% while reducing fertilizer use. BIGgrow is rich in naturally occurring plant hormones (auxins, gibberellins, and cytokinins), which enhance immunity, nutrient uptake, and resilience to drought and salinity in food crops.

This biorefinery model is already operational across three sites in the Philippines, including one in post-conflict Zamboanga Del Sur in partnership with UNDP’s ASEAN Blue Economy initiative. Each unit produces up to 12,000 liters annually and is designed to maximize local income retention, create jobs, and reduce dependence on the low-value carrageenan market.

Marine Permaculture brings marine ecosystems back to life. MP underwater structures restore the natural flow of nutrient-rich deep waters to the surface, recreating the conditions that healthy kelp forests need to thrive. Through their "Deep Cycling" technology, they move seaweed up and down in the water column to ensure it gets maximum access to these essential nutrients.

This approach directly addresses global warming because healthy kelp forests are among the most powerful carbon-absorbing ecosystems on Earth. Seaweed captures CO2 more efficiently than rainforests - up to 3000 tonnes of carbon per square kilometer - while also providing food, fuel, and fertilizer. Unlike land-based forests, these marine ecosystems can't burn, making them a more reliable long-term carbon solution.

Climate Foundation's work represents a shift from simply reducing emissions to actively healing damaged ecosystems and removing carbon from the atmosphere. Their technology can transform barren ocean areas back into thriving marine environments that support both wildlife and human communities.

The organization seeks global partners to scale these ecosystem restoration solutions, offering a practical path to reverse climate damage while creating sustainable economic opportunities for coastal communities worldwide.
